hello to everyone,
one short consultation:
from your experience and engineering point of view, for high abrasion resistant which material is better to select
carbon steel or stainless steel?

What exactly are the service conditions? Type of abrasive medium? There are plate grades of low alloy steel listed as abrasion resistant grades for service.
 
And is the environment wet or corrosive?
What about temperature and impact resistance?

thanks for your prompt reply.
here are more details as oer your indications:

- Pd = -0.015/0.02 barg (atmospheric pressure vessel)
- Td = 98 °C
- not corrosive environment and fluid is Enfleurage water with density = 1220 kg/m3, also pH = 4
- solid product is Dicalite Perlite(white powder solids) with max. 10% particles < 5.24 µm.


hope now the picture is more clear for you to give me your opinion and recommendation according to your experience.

pH=4 is highly corrosive to mild steels.

and thanks again for your interest to find solution for this topic.
the pressure vessel will be new one so in that case there is no bad experience.
according to indication from EdStainless, final solution goes to Stainless steel, and will propose to client in this case using of SS 316L.
hope you can agree with me, or still have some doubts?

I would not imply 316L stainless is your cure all here. Second this is not a pressure vessel instead it is a storage vessel. Look at duplex stainless steel instead.
 
If this a storage/mixing vessel (not a true pressure vessel) then my first thought is a 13% Mn steel.
If that doesn't have enough corrosion resistance, or there are fabrication issues then a duplex stainless would be my next choice as well.
One of the lean duplex grades (2101, 202, and so on) would be a good option. Better corrosion resistance than 316, less expensive, much stronger. And these alloys are fairly easy to weld (no special procedures).

Why do you think your product is abrasive in the tank?

hi,
"abrasive product" requirements came from the client's experience, dicalite mixture.
anyhow, thank to all for your very useful comments and suggestions.
i think I've plenty info to present to the client.
I'll come back to you in case of any further doubt.
