We frequently see this note on a major customer's prints: REFER TO THE MATERIAL SPECIFICATION INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR "STOCK" MATERIAL TOLERANCES. This has usually been read here as referring to the material thickness rather than material properties. Looking at the ASTM B209 spec for the item I'm working on, and other ASTM material specs, I don't see any reference to thickness tolerances, only chemical and mechanical properties. Are there specifications for thicknesses? We purchase material per spec, mostly steel and aluminum sheet and plate, and bar stock.

An example of an ASTM Steel specification that discusses thickness and tolerance is: A513, titled: Standard Specification for Electric-Resistance-Welded
Carbon and Alloy Steel Mechanical Tubing.

This specification covers chemistry, dimensional, and surface specification.

For bars check out ASTM A108. It should contain size tolerances.

For Aluminum Mill products you can use ANSI H35.2 American National Standard Dimensional Tolerances for Aluminum Mill Products

This is called out in the B209 specification at section 2.3

It covers just about all shapes and forms.

Thanks to each of you for your help, it is appreciated. I needed to do a closer reading of the specs before asking here.

Kind regards, Diego

Just in case - for sheet metal try SAE J1058.

Although technically it's limited to vehicles.
