material test certifcates 3

Hi all,

I have reviewed material test certificate (MTC) for steel flat bars conforming to ASTM A 36 where chemical composition and all mechanical properties are detailed and thus, meeting the requirements of A36.
Our concern is that EN 10204 3.1 is not mentioned in the MTC and client has raised the same query since it was required by their specification (MTC to EN 10204 3.1).

My question is “does it mandatory for manufacturer to mention in MTC as EN 10204 3.1 certified even though it meets international standard material grade properties” ??

If you purchased a supply of steel bar that included a CofC and/or certs that validated the material conformed to ASTM A36 requirements, but your PO did not ask for conformance with any other standards, then why would expect it to?

If you required the material to include composition and mechanical property certs showing conformance with EN 10204 3.1, then you should have specified that in your PO.

To be honest, the chemistry and mechanical properties for ASTM A36 steel bar are quite minimal.

EN 10204 does not state that the specification must be stated on the certificate, therefore it is not a requirement.

Speaking from the test lab perspective, we would test for and report conformance to those requirements on the PO. A revised cert would be issued if the customer asked for certification to an additional spec, which you should be able to get on your cert from your test lab.

You should be able to get a revised cert for a price.
We will not issue one for free if the omission was not our fault.

Why someone would be concerned about 3.1 when they are buying one of the most generic steels possible is beyond me. Who cares if the test lab is independent from manufacturing when you have no special requirements?

This issue should be taken up with your customer. If their PO required the material supplied to meet certain specs, then your company needs to supply documentation verifying the material conforms with these requirements. There is no easy way out of meeting these contractual obligations.
