Does anybody know of a simple method of cross referencing standards for example ASTM standards against ISO or British Standards

If your looking into steels, try a compendium book such as ASM's steels of the world. It lists steels in order of carbon content. If you find an ISO spec there should be an ASTM designation very close to it.
I have found that some steels have no corresponding matches.
