MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS

Hello,
We intend to compress H2S gas from 0.8 to 45 barg with a reciprocating compressor, 90% mol H2S, 3% water and 7% hydrocarbons.
The water are in the gas phase.
What are the options for the MOC for the parts in contact with the H2S gas stream? is SS316 suitable (e.g. the cylinders etc.) ?

As per NACE, Stainless Steel is not a suitable material when the partial pressure of H2S in fluid stream is in excess of 15 psig. As such, in your case, SS316 is not suitable for your application.

In your application, you need Alloy material such as Alloy 20.
