Mating Curved Objects

In SW2001 is there a way to mate two curved objects, specifically a cylindrical ring with the surface of a sphere? SW won't allow me to pick a non-linear edge (the inner edge of the ring) for mating, and selecting the inner cylindrical surface for a tangent mate to the sphere makes the surface tangent, not the edge. What I'm trying to do is like having a softball sit on top of a tin-can.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you will have to select the center plane of your sphere and use a Distance Mate to some feature of your Ring. "Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts."

I have an Example of that and the tangent mate works fine for me.

It maybe because of the way you made your sphere or the way you made the ring.

Look at my example at my site and let me know what is different between the two. Go to Portfolio and scroll down till you find it.

I hope this helps, Scott Baugh, CSWP [spin]

Even if you can't get the tangent mate for the solids to work correctly, you can still show the the sketch entities for the solids and mate them tangent............

craig,

The way that I would do this is I would select the surface of the sphere, and the top of the "tin can" And mate them as tangent. then I would select the origin or center of the sphere, and the temporary axis of the "tin can" and mate them coincident.

Ya know I cant even remember though if your version (2001) had the tangent mate or not! If you dont, 2001+ does.

happy hunting

There is a way to mate a sphere to the edge of a cylinder it involves creating an in context 3d sketch using the intersection curve tool.

1) Make the two parts.
2) Place them in an assembly and save it
3) Fix the cylinder
4) Mate the temporary axis of both parts coincident
5) Place the sphere so that it intersects the cylinder
6) Right click the sphere and choose edit part
7) Select the surface of the sphere
8) Choose the intersection curve tool and select the inside surface of the cylinder, this will create a 3d sketch on the surface of the sphere.
9) Place 3 points coincident the circle in the sketch and close it but not coincident to each other.
10) Now create a reference plane in sphere part using the 3-point.
11) Edit the assembly, Add a coincident mate to the plane that you just created and the inside edge of the cylinder, since the plane was created from 3 points that where coincident to the surface of the sphere and the circle created from the inside edge or the cylinder and the points are coincident to the circle. Then surface of the sphere will be coincident to the inside edge of the sphere.

If you need more help let me know.
Good Luck

Craig,
I forgot to include my e-mail so that you could contact me if you wanted example files. So here it goes mikewebster74@attbi.com
