Hello team, is there a limitation in heat input for individual weld passes or is just a recommended practice do not weld above 3 KJ/mm,in SAW process for steel and mild steel?

Hi II-23,
Heat input of 3KJ/mm or more is quite high, although it may not be uncommon in SAW process. As you know this is so due to the diameter of wire and the higher amperages involved.
ASME Sec-IX guides you on how to control heat input. Heat input could be drastically cut down by variations(increase) of travel speed, reducing the thickness of each pass.
3KJ/mm or more of heat input will definitely impair the charpy impact. If design requirements calls for the impact test heat input needs to be controlled below 3KJ/mm.
In this context the recommended welding parameters for a specific wire flux combination needs to be followed as recommended by manufacturer.
Thanks.
