Hi,

I have seen insulation specs calling out mineral fibre insulation per ASTM C547 and C553 for service up to 450°C since the 80s. Now, I read one EPC's spec on insulation saying mineral fibre insulation shall only be use up to 230°C because the binder in the insulation will break down above 230°C and the insulation will loose its riditity.

I like to know and understand where this came from. Can anyone help to point the way? ASTM says MW is good to 450°C and so does all other reference sources. what gives?

"riditity" - rigidity?

Mineral wool has no more rigidity than fiberglass wool unless some kind of binder is added (maybe that is enough, only you can answer that question). Different binders will cook out at different temperatures. I'd trust the manufacturer of the insulation before anybody else, including ASTM.

Agree...if you want higher temps, look at foamglass or similar

for high temp thermal insulation you should look at aerogel materials
Aspen Aerogel in Northborough NA has commercial products.
