How to measure two geometries in specified direction.

Select the first geometry that has already a direction, then select the other one (for instance, select a plan and then the other geometry. The first selection would choose the direction).

that would work if you looking for min distance from A to B, now if you're looking for distance (A,B) along direction, you might need to use Distance Analysis Tools from FSS workbench as you can define the orientation of the analysis from the compass

Even for that specific license required . Drawing is the way to go.

that would be the components... using measure between, press customize and tick Components in panel and 3D columns.
if you need a different coordinate system, choose one in the "other Axis" tick box enabled field
