I want to start my own contract design company. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I would like to talk to some of you that have already done this. Please help?

Have your basic finacial needs covered by having key clients you can rely on for scheduling work activity and references. You will find yourself doing more accounting, marketing and management than design work. If you do not have this ability is there a partner (working or silent) that you can depebd upon for assistance in these areas. Keep all agreements in written contract form.

If you are planning a one man operation or at most one or two detailers, it's a piece of cake. I am a retired tool eng (tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, special machines-whatever) and working at home specializing in jet engine tooling. I use Acad14.
If you have the necessary software and hardware and are experienced in using it, all you need for control is a financial program such as Quicken. I am going to upgrade to Quicken Pro. Get an accountant and work with him when setting up your accounts. Makes it a lot less stressfull at tax time.
If you plan a larger company a lot more planning and organization is required. I use to manage job shops with up to 275 employees so I know what is required. Walk carefully.
You have to be set up for possible rapid growth.
