Sealless pumps are often used for paints and inks that contain high solids. This includes diaphragm pumps, and reciprocating or rotary pumps where the drive shafts pass though the liquid surface to a submerged pump head.

Paints and inks with high solids are subject to shear in centrifugal pumps which is why low shear pumps such as diaphragm pumps are so prevalent in that industry.
