Has anyone heard this term before? It's come up a few times since I've moved to NZ - trying to sort out if it's just local jargon or people actually use this terminology. They seem to use it to refer to settlement caused by shear distortion of sheet pile walls (but use drained 1-D constrained moduli to calculate it?)

I understand the settlement of the ground for the reasons other than consolidation of the ground due to extraction , lowering of groundwater etc.

In this case, settlement for the reasons ; tilting of retaining wall, tunnel excavation etc are mechanical settlement.

Maybe another term for "compaction"? In other words, using mechanical means to force the soil to "settle".
