I haven't read it. Larry Niven used sunshades orbiting the sun to create night and day on Ringworld. I vaguely remember he had to add thrusters to keep them stable. Ideas like this come back to my thermostat thread, who decides what the 'optimum' temperature is - a process with no target is meaningless.
