Hello,
When installing replacement medium voltage metal clad switchgear in an existing room, is the room required to be fire rated? The switchgear is rated at 5 kV, and all circuit breakers and bus work will be 2000 amperes. All NEC requirements for egress and working space will be met or exceeded. There will be no transformers in the room with the switchgear. There will be a 125 volt (possibly 48 volt) station battery in the room, but it can be re-located if necessary. Would the answer be different if it were new construction?
Thanks and regards,
Dave

Looking at NEC 110.31 (2014 edition), since this is solely medium-voltage switchgear without the presence of a transformer, no fire resistance ratings appear to be required for the room.
