Does anyone know of a good design example for a designing roof deck diaphragms with openings?? I have an existing building where we are removing a portion of the deck for an addition. I am having issues resolving the chord forces (I am OK for shear) around the opening and was wondering if there was a good design example I could use. I believe I am being conservative in my assumptions and would like to refine my numbers.

"Guide to the Design of Diaphragms, Chords and Collectors" is very helpful. It's based on 2006 IBC, but the design principles don't change. There are chapters on rigid, semirigid, and flexible diaphragms, with an example for each. You can get it from International Code Council's website.

Thanks flight7, I may have to look that one up.

Also the Steel Deck Institute manual has several examples of diaphragm, chord and drag strut design.
