Just to easy my mind, not easy because there is not a lot left;

It's not a welding process and I don't think that its an electroplating process - so what is it?

Any ideas.

Also known as "vapour deposition" when applied to plastic parts.

it can be a plating or electroplating process as well.

Putting a layer, coating, surface treatment, skin, etc.) of metal on a non-metal. We electroplate cerqmics so they braze readily and well with standard alloys.

They also use it to bronze baby shoes.

We actually do metalizing or "spray welding". It is used quite extensively in machine repair. Building up worn surfaces and finish machining. We spray steel and bronze and if done correctly is a very cost effective way to save parts rather than starting over. All of our spray welding is done shafts or cylindrical parts. Not usually built up more than a 1/16" or so.

In aviation we call it FlameSpray. Oxy-acetylene application of 1100 Aluminum on Fiberglass parts for Lightning strike protection and sprayed on antenna surface.

I think metalizing is a term used by some in a general manner, and by others as a very specific process.

I saw an example just last week (the final result, not the process), and it sure looked like flame-sprayed (or similar) to me.

We metalize plastic electronic enclosure (for EMC) using paint with high concentration of metallic filler...I think this term is abused in general.
