Microturbine Generates Electricity and Heat at New York Grocery Store

A New York supermarket recently became the first grocery store in the country to install a 60kW microturbine. Waldbaum's, a Hauppauge, N.Y., supermarket, installed a natural gas-fueled microturbine that generates 15% to 20% of the store's electricity and serves as a dehumidifier. The $180,000 project was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, the American Gas Association, the Gas Technology Institute, KeySpan, and the New York State Energy Research Development Agency. Because energy is the third highest expense for a supermarket, Waldbaum's is also considering installing seven to 10 turbines at another site in Centereach, N.Y. For more information on microturbines, read "Pint Sized Power Producers," ( )a cover story about microturbines that appeared in EC&M's February 2003 issue.

Depends upon your definition of "micro".

A few manufacturers are making small gas turbines in the range of 50-100kW, including I believe General Electric. You can also try who are based in UK.

If you are thinking of very small, domestic sized units, try which is actually a small (1200W) stirling engine based micro CHP unit designed to replace small central heating boilers.

There is a Capstone turbine somewhere in NYC, go to CAPStone website and call them

OOOPs, looks like someone already beat me to the Capstone info, sorry. BTW, if you happen to be in Panama City, Florida, visit the Navy base there and ask if you can tour a Hovercraft. They have two onboard 60KW microturbines made by TurboMach
