Migrate spreadsheet data

We have an old file that did not have its spreadsheet data migrated from Xess to Excel. We no longer have Xess on any of our systems. Is there a way for us to migrate to spreadsheet data to excel or are we stuck and have to redo it?

Thanks.

Once the file is open, go to...

Preferences -> Spreadsheet...

...and set the 'Default Spreadsheet' to 'Excel' and toggle On the 'Force Migrate Spreadsheet Data' option. Close the dialog by hitting OK and then go to...

Tools -> Spreadsheet...

...and the data from your old XESS sheet should now be displayed in a new Excel page. Now when you close the Excel page be sure to hit the OK button when you're asked if you wish to save the changes to the Spreadsheet.

John,

I don't have the option to "force migrate spreadsheet data." I only have the choice of xess and excel. I also should have correctly stated that this is for part family data.

Sorry, I was looking at a newer version of NX. In NX 6.0, while you should still change this Preference to Excel just so that the system knows what it's to do the next time you attempt to open a Spreadsheet in this file, to actually migrate the Spreadsheet data from the XESS format into an Excel scheme, go to...

File -> Utilities -> Migrate Spreadsheet Data...

...where you will be given a dialog where you can migrate all of the various Spreadsheets used in NX from XESS to Excel.

Is there a workaround if you don't have xess anymore? That is where our problem arises.

Are you saying that you can't use the 'Utilities' tool? I don't have any old files with XESS data to test this with (and it would have been a real test since I don't have XESS on my system either) so I can't really say if it should have worked or not.

That being said, I suspect that the option that is now available in the Preferences -> Spreadsheet dialog (BTW, this was added in NX 8.0) is what will address this situation since the name of the option implies that this will 'force' the migration no matter what (note that I could find no documentation on this new 'feature' and since I'm not in the office today I may not be able to follow-up on this until Monday).

Worst case scenario - send the file to GTAC. I'm 95% sure they have to tools to migrate your data and send the file back. Make sure to tell them the version of NX and Excel that you use.

My solution is to open the file in NX 8; force the update to excel, then save the family table as an excel workbook so my user can then delete the xess part family and recreate it from the excel file.

So my suspicions were correct, that the changes we made in NX 8.0 did provide support for FORCING the migration even if you did NOT have a version of XESS running. It would appear that short of getting new copy of XESS, that you've found a way of accomplishing what was needed.

You are correct, John, and your little tip about forcing the update was exactly what I needed.

Thanks.
