MIL-STD Steel Groupings A-36 Equivalent

Hi all,

I am looking for some answers on Mil-Std 278. In the base metal grouping table there is no listing for A36 plate steel. Does someone know what the MIL-STD eqivalent to A36 steel would be? In group"S-1" in the table it shows carbon steel so I am assuming it should be within this group. There are other ASTM grades listed along with the MIL-STD classifications.

The military standards include ASTM base metal specifications that comply with the requirements of the standard. In this case, ASTM A36 is included in the military specification for ordinary steel MIL-S-22698C in Table III. There is a limit on the thickness that is permitted and end uses. 3/4 inch is the maximum thickness and there are restrictions on notch toughness as well as other conditions that apply.

You will need to review the requirements contained in MIL-S-22698C to verify the application will allow the substation and use of ASTM A36.

So if I'm reading it correctly A36 is listed for use as bars and bar size shapes only limited to 3/4" like you said.

For ordinary strength structural steel such as plates, I would need to spec out "ABS grade A" or "ABS grade B" instead of A36 as stated in 1.2.1 unless approval is sought for usage of A36 plate?

Thanks alot Al that really helped me out.

Since we're talking MIL-STD, the customer would like metal core wire to be used but I am not finding any on the filler metal chart Table 2 in Mil-Std 278. It seems to me that I would have to seek approval for the usage of this. I am going off of a 1995 revision of the standard so I am just wondering if there have been updates that would apply to the usage of metal core wire.
