Hi i recently did some marking on half inch stainless steel and it work fine. Now they think to give me some marking to do on mild steel. I have a 4kw fiberlaser and the lowest power i can go is 400 watts. Is that possible to do it and what gas will be best nitrogen or oxygen? Is there kind of mild steel working better than others?

Are you talking about etching? I typically etch using shop air as the assist gas. 500w, 350 inches per minute and about 20-25% duty. Works like a charm. You can use O2 if you don't have good dry air.

Well thanks for the answer Merill101. Yes talking about etching. I'll try O2 and the power you say. I guess you are using a CO2 laser. I am not familiar with the duty but I will start with that. I will give feedback on it.

I'm running an Amada 4kw Fiber laser. Duty is just the percentage of the power call out. Good luck.
