I really like Novamind. The Mac version and the Windows version are really good.

I've used the "mind-mapping" (which I liken to linking digital post-it notes together to form something with meaning) technilogy to write outlines for scopes of work. It's much more "free" than scheduling/PM software.

Also, you can write movie screenplays with Novamind.

I think, mindmappers (= spider diagrams) are mostly too restrictive for engineers. What they call mindmap is a simple hierarchy (1-to-n relationship), but spiderlike arranged. We had a young colleague with a mindmapper on his notebook, but he removed it soon. The most used "PIM" software in our portfolio is MS Outlook, Excel and Aibase. The later ( for presentations, large prints and fast structuring of technical information.

on this i have to disagree - allthough im not certain in what context that you think it should used?

I use mindmap a lot for not taking, minuting and brainstorming an idear. Outlook, access and those other programs that you mention are for totally different purposes.

I newer use it for presentation for others - only for my self. Mostly because a lot of people seems to have a "block" against such things and i dont want to shove it down thier throats.

I just sometime find it easier to use software instead of a hand drawing.

I've never seen the term "spider diagram," but it makes a lot of sense.

I like the mind maps for preliminary scoping and brainstorming - which is where it's appropriate. I've tried doing mind-mapping type stuff using Excel and such, but most of the time is spent sizing text boxes and getting the callouts to look right; NovaMind does that stuff automatically. I took a look at the Aibase website and that's an application that looks pretty darn good. I'm going to check out the demo.

Morton, the term "mindmap" describing the diagram is tending to be a bit provocative, that's all :). Otherwise, I can see that it can be useful as organizer and brainstormer.

I have found (on the few occation where i actually tried to put a mindmap on the "overhead" that people get totally numb with the sight - forget all about the purpose - and can only think of the map.

So therefore i dont use it except for my self (and tend to hide them a little :)
