Hi all,
I was reading ACI 314R-11, It is specified that the minimum column dimension is 250 mm or the vertical distance between lateral supports over (10 ,9 or 8, depend on location). When I rechecked ACI 318 I didn't notice any note regarding this issue. Note that for a 2 story building with 3m ceiling height a column with width 30 cm minimum can be a bit large.
So is there any exact minimum dimension. Thank uyou!

ACI 318 has an implied limit in section 10.11.5 where if your kL/r exceeds 100, you have to do a full blown detailed analysis of the column considering cracking, material non-linearity, shrinkage, creep, and second order effects.

Thank you JAE for your reply.
In my case kL/r in less than 100.
So I can neglect the limitation of 314 and design the column only according to 318

In my jurisdiction (Canada), fire ratings come into play as well. I don't remember if that is the case south of the border as well.

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

JAE: Chapter 10.11.5 does not exist in ACI 318-08 and it would appear the limit you cite has been removed. Can you confirm?

I'm away from the office - it is simply the section in chapter 10 that differentiates between a full blown second order analysis verses the ACI approximate method using moment magnification procedures.
