I have a connection where I would like to install an anchor(s) in the top of a concrete slab. The anchor(s) will need to take a shear load but no tension force. The issue I'm running into is the slab has a total thickness of 3" and is supported by 9/16" non-composite metal decking. Additionally the bottom of the slab is not accessible for any kind of a thru-bolt connection.

Are there any mechanical or adhesive anchors that can be installed in a slab that thin?

Would the use of a masonry anchor be acceptable? (i.e. Hilti HY20 with a screen)

So you have a non-structural form deck with a total of 3" maximum thickness of concrete cover, therefore only about 2.45" of concrete to play with.

I would check the Hilti Profus program that is compliant with Appendix D using your loads and see what pops out.

Looking at the anchors in Profis and also the Simpson anchors neither gives me an option for concrete that thin. That's where I started considering the use of a masonry anchor with a screen.

Shear loads are generally transferred to the anchor in the form of tension. I'd talk to the Hilti engineer to see what anchorage is possible. The use of the screen is a definite possibility.

There was a thread about this last week. Try the Hilti program and see what it comes up with. Good program.

What about drilling through the slab, inserting a toggle bolt, and epoxying in the excess diameter of the hole??

Try contacting Hilti. A local Hilti field engineer helped me in the past with anchors in 2-1/2" Light Weight Concrete on 1-1/2" deck (4"total).
