Minimum Return Distance on Fillet Welds

All,

What is the minimum return distance for a typical fillet weld?

To set up my exact detail:
-I have precast hollow core bearing on a concrete foundation wall
-The precast will have steel plates embedded in the bottom
-We will bolt a flat steel plate to the inside face of the foundation wall
-Fillet weld where the two steel surfaces meet

Is there a minimum distance by code that our embed plate needs on the flat steel plate?
My gut tells me a minimum of 1/2".

There are also a great deal of lateral loads due to soil pressures (hence why the welded connection is necessary).

Any reference or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jReck

The standard length of a return [wrap-around] is "length is 2x weld size". So if you have detailed 1/4" fillets, 1/2" is indeed the length.

AWS D1.1 does not require an end return, but if they are required by the Engineer, they must be indicated on the drawing.

Reference AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2010 clauses 2.3.4 and 2.9.3.3.

Can you not bear the HC on Korolath or Masonite and use reinforcing between the panels?

Thanks for the responses Duwe6 and gtaw. I appreciate it.

Dik: There are some cases where we are taking 2200 PLF adjacent to hollow core forces and 1900 PLF parallel with the hollow core forces (both lateral earth forces). These loads can act simultaneously. I was needing one of our larger 7x7 embed plates with 4 studs @ 18" O.C. to make these loads work. Did you have a different idea in mind Dik? I do not believe drilled pins will be able to withstand these forces.
