hi,
I am a new ABAQUS user.
I am trying to model a crack in 2D square plate.
Could anyone please tell me the steps that I should take to model a crack in the top of a 2D square plate.
Thanks,

First step is to read the documentation.
ABAQUS/CAE User's Manual -> 20.1 Modeling fracture mechanics

Or you can search the HTML documentation for "crack" , "fracture mechanics".

What kind of crack are you working? surface crack or through thickness crack ? In my old day using abaqus, I modelled the quarter of geometry to model the central crack. Be careful about the singularity of the crack tip. I moved the nodes around the crack tip by 1/4 from the crack tip. I need to re-define the coordinate of these nodes. I am not sure CAE can do something more easlier now. For 2-D plate, you can use 2-D shell plane stress or plane strain elements.

johnsmith2,

The reference that xerf supplied answers all last question. Yes, there are special techniques in ABAQUS/CAE for modeling cracks, handling the singularity etc etc...
