Hallo all

Does any one perhaps know how to show the edge lines of a 3D model on a stress contour plot? (also in case of a deformed model/geometry).

I am only aware of the Filled Edges setting; but, it plots lines representative of all element edges (not only for edges lying on the model outer boundary, i.e. it shows the complete mesh). Many times one prefers a cleaner plot, or, sometimes a lot of fine mesh details could even block out the contour details.

Thank you
Regards
Gert

Hello,

The true answer to your question deals with the complex notion of feature detection.
A simpler and direct (though weaker) method, accessible in FEMAP is to use free edges:
- activate free edges (View Select > Free edges)
- in View Options > Tools and view style > Free edge and Face > Free edge / Backface > select "2 View, Draw Model"
- Turn off element edges

This will show free edges and your model. This should be compatible with contour plotting.

This is however a "weak" method, because free edges aren't feature edges (I'm guessing you are thinking of feature edges when saying "the edge lines of a 3D model"). For example if two wedge elements come together to form a corner, the common edge isn't free and won't show up. For tetra mesh free edges will typically appear as a "dotted" line.

Macros exist if the simple method isn't satisfying for you.

Hallo "APav"

You know your story..! - thanks a lot! This little bit of functionality already evaded me right from the beginning when we started using Femap. I tested the method as proposed and could see why you call it "weak", but it gives me 80% of what I need - enough to live with I guess..

Best regards
Gert
