Model Tree Items 2

Newbie here. Frustrated WF3 user - coming from Solidworks. Settings/ Tree Filters/ Display shows several default items checked. I want to include three additional, but I have to re-check the boxes for each model. How do I make the system know that I ALWAYS want to include display these items in my model tree?

Save a tree config file & tell Pro/E where to find it.

Doesn't the file have to be named tree.cfg?
Been off WF for a while. :))

Thanks for the answers.
There is a "Save Settings File" below the Settings button. And I did save the file, but the system doesn't seem to pick up the saved file automatically. If I have to go tell proe to use the file I saved, I may as well just reset the settings each time. Another ProE opportunity missed.

WF will pick up the file, but you do have to tell it which file is where in the config.pro file with the setting for "mdl_tree_cfg_file".

That setting is to the filename!

You can lead a hoss to water but you can't make him drink.

Unlike saladworks, all Pro/E configuration settings have to be saved in ascii text config files. It may seem quaint compared to a point and shoot interface but in reality it lets you have multiple configurations and very powerful control. But you have to learn how it works.

The setting is the file name. Ahhh, yes it is. And now life is better - I thank you.
As I'm shown the way to work with the details, the big stuff is more easily overcome. I'm really trying to bury the sarcasm but I'm afraid it will surface from time to time. The help you guys offer is certainly appreciated.

My frustration is less with ProE and more with my work environment. These guys use it as it comes from the box with no customization at all. That said, ProE's resistance to the windows environment with spell check in the note function and underscores in folder titles is just wrong. A program written to operate in a windows environment should be fully windows compliant.

That's just it. It wasn't written for a Windoze environment. It was written for platform independence so it could run on multiple versions of Unix, Linux & latter, Windoze. They have dumped Linux recently and I hear they are going to dump the remaining Unix support in the future. About 10 years after that finally happens you will see a seamless Windoze implementation.

I still rue the day I had to turn of my HP-UX box. They worked so well & were so stable, I only rebooted when they shut the power off to work on the sub station transformers.

dgallup - Sometimes a little insight into the thought process that drives programs makes me SOOO much more tolerant of these "shortcomings". I'll back away from my attitude.

IMHO, we have the wrong program where I work. ProE is certainly a very serious design tool, but our design work isn't beginning to use those capabilities. We do a lot of SBIR submittable work and I struggle with the with the 'planar' requirements of ProE modeling - I need to route cables in their natural lie - and certainly wiring isn't planar. I come from a true 3D environment and I don't care if I can't make a drawing of my cabling models. When I'm done I need to know what the cable length is after it's routed. That's my frustration. This forum could be my salvation and I look forward to the day I can start to answer questions!

The Pro/E settings which are contained in the config.pro text file can be accessed from
Tools > Options menu

Many Pro/E users like myself know tons of these settings and the wording for them by heart. If you are new to Pro/E or haven't used it in a while it's not like Riding a bike which has been the same for quite a while now. In Pro/E you'd have to use the CTRL key in order to get both of your feet on the peddles. The options change but the Find tool is great it allows you to search by category or even search the descriptions.

If you are unsure of an option you can type in a word to search for and hit find. Then you'll be presented with a list of options with descriptions of use and settings.

Most options have settings of the types listed below
config_option_name (Yes/No)
sketcher_refit_after_dim_modify no
sketcher_starts_in_2d no
parenthesize_ref_dim yes
display_coord_sys yes
visible_mapkeys no

config_option_name (Word, Number)
orientation Trimetric, ISOMETRIC, USER_DEFINED
datum_point_symbol circle
visible_message_lines 2
general_undo_stack_limit 100
sketcher_undo_stack_limit 300

config_option_name (C:\\path to folder, file, program)
trail_dir C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Docs\cad\_ProE_WF4\_trails
tablet_device_name C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE

config_option_name (On/Off)
19_PROJ_ANGLE (hidden On/Off)
19_PROJ_BOUNDARY (hidden On/Off)
19_PROJ_CHAMFER (hidden On/Off)

Hidden Options are usually used to turn off features that have not been completed or perfected by the developers.
If you type a valid option and value (Yes/No, On/Off, 10) the Add button will be activated.
Use these options at your own risk.

Great site by Olaf Corten to check out for config options is.
[rofl]
I sometimes wish "SaladWorks" could use text files for settings because of the hassles with using the Registry for settings like SolidWorks does. Pro/E lets you export your settings to a text file without needing the Registry permissions. To make sure your config.pro options get loaded just set the StartIn directory for your Pro/E shortcut to the directory where your config.pro is located

Soloboss.
Have you tried using Pro/Cabling? I haven't, but in your situation I could see it being beneficial.
I too have run many hoses and wires, and it is difficult to model them in a realistic natural state, and get the total length when done.
I use advaced pipe for a lot of this tpe of work for now. If I did much more, I'd consider the Pro/piping or pro/cabling add-ons.

Thanks guys. I'm not ignoring you, I'm in the middle of something and trying to absorb what you're feeding me (that sounded bad - sorry) This is good stuff and I'm taking notes so I perform functions correctly and build GOOD habits.
Here's a simple question about the forum. I check MILITARY when I signed in the first time. How do I change that to MECHANICAL?

I'm working the boss pretty hard to make the jump from WF3 to WF5. I'm still a fairly new user with ProE. The tidbits I'm finding appear to make the latest release more user friendly. I am fairly certain that I'll the move from docked/locked menu items that make me tired from looking and mousing all over the screen. And the default color of the background is no longer the same color as the model default color(simply brilliant). But it's the meaty changes that I'm curious about. I want some user input before I "win" this one. I sure don't want my victory to make things worse! Any thoughts? (Or am I in the wrong place in the forum?)

Thanks, Mark

Double check the new layout of the drawing mode to make sure you are comfortable with the "improvements".

Also, the simplified rep dialog box has been completely revamped as well.

Install it and play with it for awhile before you make any kind of commitment. You can have lots of Pro/E installations at the same time & run each one independantly. I currently have 4 but I only use 2.

I was starting to push the boss for a jump from WF3 to WF5. Then I saw the CoCreate webinar. I'm way ready to go there. Just work and stop answering questions!! Ohhhh yeahhh.

I installed CoCreate. Can't think of a single reason to use it.
