Modeling a hydraulic cylinder? 2

So how would you do it? I DID do a search and didn't really find anything.

Pretty much everything we do at work involves hydraulic cylinders. But we purchase them, so we don't need to detail them fully. Now as I understand it, SW can have "deformable" materials....is that true? because I was thinking that I could just make the rod of the cylinder "deform" between closed and open.

I realize I could model the cylinder as two separate parts: the body, and the rod/piston. I could just model uch that the physical dynamics would give me what I want. But I'm curious if there was a way I could do it as a single part, just for simplicity's sake.

Anyone with a good answer will receive many stars for their wisdom......

Have you worked through the SW Online Tutorials? If you haven't, I strongly suggest that you do.
If you have, then you need to revisit the Design Table one. It explains how to create Configurations within a single part.
You will not have to "deform" anything in your Hydraulic Cylinder ... simply create different lengths of the rod, per configuration, using either a DT or manually.
Please also read the configurations, create manually section in the SW Help files.

Make your cylinder as an assembly using an "Advanced" mate to set the stroke. Once you insert it into an assembly, set properties to "Flexible" and then you can have its rod move in and out freely and thereby constrain the rest of your assembly.

Be advised that you'll need to create new configurations for each instance if you use the "Flexible" approach.

Beyond that, I'd echo CBL's advice.

In SW2005 you no longer have to make separate configurations.

Sorry to revive this thread, but my question is kinda related. And I did go throught he help and I didn't really find what I wanted.

I made my hydraulic cylinder, (as an assy) with my advanced mate. And it's works great. But now if I insert it into my top assy, it gets treated as a rigid part. How can I "un-rigid" it, so that the cylinder rod will move when it's in my top assy?
 
never mind... "flexible".

as you were.
 
In your top level go to the sub assy you want flexible and rmb and properties. Lower right is rigid/flexible selection, select flexible.

RMB the cylinder in the Feature Tree, under properties there is a choice to solve it as rigid or flexible, choose flexible.
 
Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Bosch-Rexroth,

But they do have a fantastic online cylinder designer that will give you a solid model at the end - granted the solids are dumb but parts can be made such as the cylinder body and rod with rod end.
