modeling of winding in FEA for mechanical stress analysis

Hi..

I am working on a structural analysis of an alternator under rotational forces( Using Optistruct ).
can any one help me in modeling copper winding.Its not possible for me to model all strands and applying contacts.
IOs there any any modeling technique for modeling winding for structural analysis..
All i want find is deflections in the winding due to centrifugal forces. I m reallyt facing a big trouble to model the material for winding as it is difficult to predict the material properties for a copper winding when it is winded.
I am modelling the as a solid block but what material properties to be applied ?...
Please help me ...This is crucial for me..

I assume you're talking about random wound machines and particularly about the endwindings.

Obviously an input to your calculation would be the strands per coil and size of each strand and length/geometry, so far so good.

I can imagine it would be a heckuva lot stiffer if all strands move together while bending (with no axial relative sliding) than if the strands are free to move independently. As a familiar analogy - bending a stack steel shims is a heckuva lot easier than bending a block of steel of the same thickness.

But unfortunately where the winding lies along that spectrum will probably depend to a large extent upon the construction and processing of the winding. What type of wrappings and papers/separators are employed in the endwindings. What type of resin / vpi processing is used. We have a spec for random wound machines in extreme environment where paper is wound into the endwinding in such a manner as to increase retention of vpi resin in the endwinding.... that winding is going to end up really stiff.

I'm not saying I can give you any useful input about how to do your FEA analysis, I'm just pointing out the things you might want to think about to get a good analysis.
