Dear All,

Is it possible to make roller Support carrying bending moment? If some one is having real life example please share. And please share the design considerations also.

So you want an end support which resists bending moment but free to translate laterally? What about vertically? With some careful design and detailing, you could probably achieve this, but what this connection looks like will be highly dependent on the materials, loads, and geometric constraints (you know, the details).

Do you have a specific situation where you need to achieve this end condition, or are you just generally curious?

I also feel that the performance of the connection to act as a true roller would be suspect.

Theoretically, it would be no different than a tight fitting sleeve connection, akin to removable guardrails, however there's usually a fair bit of slop in the guardrail before the moment resistance kicks in via force coupling.

Arbu:
You could have a continuous beam over a roller support, with its accompanying continuous beam moments. You could have a roller support with a cantilever beam out beyond that support and this would provide a fixed end moment to the extent of the canti. length and the loading on that canti. I’m sure other details could be developed which would apply an end moment (fixed moment) at a roller. You have to tell us what you are really trying to do if you want any further meaningful discussion. That is, meaningful sketches and description. We don’t particularly like playing 20 questions her on E-Tips.

Dear CANPRO and dhengr,

I am having a Space frame building over two adjacent steel parking building separated by an expansion joint of 440 mm. Space frame is supported by Steel columns and no bracing is allowed for lateral loads. I am getting drift more than allowable limit. I need to keep drift < H/250. That's why I am planning to make left side column base plate as roller carrying Moment and right side base plate as fixed. But issue is I have following values of left column support reactions (Approx).

Moment on base = 1250 kN-m due to wind
Tension on base plate = 180 kN

Now for these values is it possible to make Roller carrying moment. And how much roller length I need to consider for base plate by considering this 440 mm Expansion gap.
