So I'm reading Electronic Design Magazine and stumble across an ad for a synchronous step-down converter with 'telemetry' by Monolithicpower. Great! On interesting products I go get the data sheet and stick it in my interesting ICs folder that I peruse before I embark on new designs.

I go to their website and find the part, go to download it and "[!]STOP! we won't let you have the data sheet unless you're registered.[/!]"

I despise sites like this. Usually I stop there - no sale. But in this case I decide to register. After giving them all my details they inform me that 'someone will review my application and possibly dine to grant me access'. But, NOOooooOOOO, no one bothers. After two weeks nothing.

I can't imagine why these people think registration should be needed to grant people access to ICs they're peddling in industry rags.

Anyone else manage to get a data sheet from these fools?

In our jurisdiction a truck mechanic also holds an appropriate certificate. A friend of mine is a ticketed truck mechanic. When he's on a pipeline project he often has to repair equipment where it sits. Minus 30, 40 or sometimes 50 degrees in winter, deep mud in summer. If he has a shop to work in it is often an industrial tent. He may be away from his family for weeks at a time. 12 hours is often a short day.
He is very well paid.

That is a favorable situation compared to many of today's automobiles, such as the 2014 Charger I used to own. Replacing an HVAC blend door actuator (readily available to anyone with money for about $35), requires physical replacement of said part, then initialization with proprietary software (the dealer charges $100-200). Of course, a mere owner cannot legally buy the S/W at any price.

A BMW owner told me that replacing the starting battery in his car requires a $200 "reprogramming" session, plus the cost of said battery.

That puts a different perspective on it Bill - yes, sounds like they do earn their money. :)

And to think not a single person has yet remarked or commented on the title "Moronlithicpower" - brilliant!

I'm sure we all noticed, CR, but then saw that it was ITSMOKED who made the pun.
Calling his jeux-de-mots "brilliant" will just encourage him to commit more offenses.

Then I've definitely done the right thing! [bigsmile]
