Motor winch voltage problem

Hi guys,

I was wondering could you guys help with the following problem.
The problem is this, I have a client who is looking a 415v motor winch installed on a ship.
The winch is mobile, and is used on and off shore,
One big problem is that the supply voltage on the ship, is 230v three phase.
Considering the motor only works on 415v, what is the best way to solve the problem.
I have considered a transformer, but the current for this winch is 20A per phase AT 415v full load, and a starting current of 63A.
A transformer at 230v three phase will pull to much current into the primary taps, as the ship only offers a 32A supply.

Well then...you can't get there from here; available ships power is less than what you say the motor will draw.

Well like btrueblood said you will not have enough power.

230V*32A = 7360W existing
415V*20A = 8300W desired for just this motor

You are 1000 Watts shy and this is with everything else on the ship turned off. I would look into either upgrading the existing system or adding some additional generating capacity.

Just though you guys might know a way around this.
I will look at the winch motor, and see if i can get a smaller one to do the job.

That would be the best solution. Turn the winch much slower with gearing then you have the same pull and a lower horsepower requirement.
