thread731-139877

Well, I moved to Houston earlier this year. I found the above thread very helpful as I evaluated my offer.

Don't like the traffic, but I have one question. Does one ever eat at a restaurant a second time? There are so many to try out I don't see how you could ever go back to one a second time. I am fighting the battle of the extra 5 lbs., but I also found a health club to join.

We are enjoying it here, overall. The way I have it figured, I can't live far from Art Montemeyer.

I've been in Houston over 14 years now. I moved here from the mid-west so getting used to the 8 month long summers is still an effort.

Food is great and yes you will get back to restaurants, but as it was said before, ususally out of habit. We have the restaurants we prefer and stick to them, but still sample other options at times.

My neighborhood situation has been different than that of Controlnovice. When I moved into my house there was only one family with kids on our street. Now I have a 3 year old daughter and there are 5 other girls on our street within 5 house of mine who range in age from 2 to 6. All of the kids play outside and for the last two years my front yard was usually ground zero for all of the kids. I also have a few other neighbors who do socialize out in the streets. You get warm, but it is worth it.

Ironically I just spent two weeks in Chile and in particular in the southern parts where it isn't quite spring yet and didn't take enough serious cold weather clothes. I was cold all week and looking forward to getting back to warmth in Houston only to find that it is now cooled off significantly here. I'm still cold. Go figure.

It snowed in Michigan this week. Life is good near Houston!

Good luck,

Latexman--

Sure, you say that now... But in August, when the temperature is at a hundred and the humidity is at 90%, and life on the Gulf coast is a series of dashes from one air-conditioned haven to another, that is when I figure that as a yound child I was kidnapped in Minnesota by a roving band of itenereant Cajuns and hauled down here against my will.

I never get used to Gulf Coast summers...

I'm a hundred and fifty miles east of Houston.

During Gulf coast summers I will long for pleasant Michigan summers and give thanks I am no longer in the Middle East where I experienced 125 F! But, I'd rather have Gulf coast summers than gloomy Michigan winters.

Good luck,

HOUSTON is a great place! ...TO BE FROM! Lived there 4 years ...don't like the snakes and rats, humidity, 12" of rain in an hour, or the red bugs! Only thing I miss is the food (as most have pointed out), and the duck hunting! Give me the Pacific Northwest any day!

Just moments ago Houston won the MLS championship on penalty kicks. Now that is way cool, living in a city with a championship soccer (futbol) team. Congratulations home team. Go Dynamos.

Can you say PAPPAS Family resturants, love'm all, got to go to one in Albequerque... Huston can stand with any east coast city on choices of places to eat!!

Just watch out--that Pappas Brothers Steakhouse is NOT in the same price range as Pappasito's and Pappadeaux! Found that out the hard way. (Real good, though.)

And Please don't eat at Pappadeaux and think you've had Cajun food...

Should have read "...but it IS good!"

Is everything on the menu Texas size in houston? Yeah, you better stay in shape.

In yesterday's Houston Chronicle the following was reported:

Houston has:

Over 700 Mexican Restaurants,
365 Chinese Restaurants,
240 Italian Restaurants,
140 Vietnamese Restaurants,
120 Japanese Restaurants,
51 Indian Restaurants,
370 Seafood restaurants,
370 Sandwich shops,
350 Pizzerias,
175 Barbecue joints, (sic)
160 Steakhouses,
and,
150 hamburger joints (not counting fast food chains.

For my part, I think that count has to be just inside the corporate city limits of Houston and does not include suburbs like Spring, Tomball, The Woodlands, Sugarland, Clear Lake, etc.

Also, I question the count on the barbecue places.

I just fell onto this thread - via a hyperlink formed when I checked up on another thread - and now find that we are neighbors. If you are living near the Compaq (now HP) campus on Hwy 249 & Louetta you are around 3-4 miles away from my humble adobe hacienda.

Welcome to the NW Houston area and our great autumn Football weather. It is, indeed a small world. I live close by and work at Beltway 8 & I-45 (GreensPoint area) so we share similar short & sweet commuting routes. I hope all is going well for you in work assignments and that you're enjoying the good weather and different restaurants. Stay out of Perry's at Cypresswood Drive & Schroeder Rd. unless you've deep pockets. The food and wine are stupendous - but the tradeoff is a hefty bill.

Perhaps we can get together for a chat and/or a beer/wine glass or two. I'm in the phone book. I'm in the middle of a very large and expensive kitchen renovation project for the "Boss", but I can always work in an excused absence.

Welcome! And thanks for raising our engineering I.Q. level another notch.

Thanks Art,

With regards to Perry's, been there and done that, but I did it while I was still on relocaton expenses. I just thought this evening as I passed it on the way home from work that I ought to take the bride there again and an upcoming anniversary is just such an occasion.

I like it here and she does too. That is a good thing.

It is good to hear from you. I'll look you up in the phone book and give a call within the next few weeks depending upon my travel schedule. Looking forward to it.
