Geotechnical

Hello
I recently passed the PE exam for Geotechnical. I was wondering how I can speak to my principals about moving up to become a project manager now that I'm a PE. I don't want to be in the field so often and prefer more of an office environment and tasks. I've done my 10,000 hours in the field already (at a previous company). It's time for a new chapter. There are five others in our company who are not PEs but have taken more of a PM role without the title. They've been at the company longer than I have as I switched to this current company a year ago. I feel like they might be an issue if I "leap frog" these five coworkers. I also fear they might not even give me the role or title of PM because of it.

Don't worry about leap-frogging anybody. I supervised a couple of PE's before I passed my exam.

Do your principals know your desire to move onto that career track? If you have the skills and desire to pursue that track, a decent employer will help you get there.

Just be open and honest with them. They should want to know your future goals, because good employees are difficult to find and retain.

I wouldn't worry too much about it either. If I were one of your coworkers I would not mind at all because I stay as far away from Project management as I can.
