I am attempting to evluate ms97pro. It is an update from 95pro which is an update from office pro and bookshelf which is apparently '94.

Before the 97 will load, it requires the loading the original full blown 94 and then the 95 upgrade. Everything seems to go OK until 97 is "100%" loaded and then it gives me the following message:

Microsoft Office 97 Setup
Htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register in the system registry

After closing this box, the following message comes up:

Microsoft Ofice 97 was not completed successfully

Does this mean that office pro 97 will not run on Windows xp? Or is it some other problem?

I don't understand why you are trying to use a 8-yr old version of Office.

Hypothetically, Office97 should work with XP, since it is listed as being compatible with both NT and 2000

Because I am cheap and can buy it from my boss who used to do computer service work.

Works came with my computer but Works spreadsheet is not compatible with Excel 2003 on xp which my son has and we need to transfer data remotely for a business venture which requires large cash investment leaving little for new software. Should I look for a later version of Office on ebay?

At my son's regular workplace, the owner runs 97 Excell and every one else runs 2003 and they are compatible so we expect to be compatible and will test before purchase but will it work on xp?

Who can know what "Htmlmarq.ocx" means. I will quiz our IT guy tomorrow but am losing time and besides that I am impatient to boot.

You might trying posting this question on one of the Tek-Tip forums. That site specializes on software issues

It appears to be a well-known problem relating to XP SP2. Google gives several answers including:

WARNING - BACK UP your registry before messing with it. Don't mess with it if you're not sure of what you're doing!

Good Luck

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

John, Now I don't feel quite so dumb since it is a common problem but no I don't know what I am doing. When I have a few more minutes, I will hit your link just out of curiosity.

IRstuff, Went to Tek Tips but no response yet. People there must have a life.

My son and I talked last night and decided to buy Office 2003. Time's awaste'n. He has Office 2002 on his laptop and Office 2003 on an obscure drive on his desktop. We need to get our act together on the same page. Also his boss is using Office 97 on xp so it is not a 97/xp problem.

Thanks again for trying.

XP SP2 does not like older programs try the costomizing option on the program
