We are trying to start a 370 KW motor behind a 1600KW transformer.
We are unsuccessful because the transfomer protection relay trips .

Considering the amount of information you haven't given us, what do you expect us to do about it? Put yourself in our position and ask yourself 'what information would I be looking for to answer this question?'.

Sometimes I only open my mouth to swap feet...

Like, which transformer protection relay, anyway?

Possibly you may want to re-evaluate the trip settings on the transformer protection.
Then again it may be well to re-evaluate the entire protection scheme of the transformer.
Many of us have had similar experiences on start-ups when someone with either too much optomism or to little experience (or both) has set the protection points too low.

Try using frequency converter. Starting currents are will be small and you will have nice engine speed control.
Although this solution is expensive it may be the only solution because the other solution would be to change tripping values for transformer protection.
We had similar problem, but with much smaller engine, and FQ was the safest solution.

I hope this will help you :)
