My company has been awarded a contract to do extensive corrosion resistant overlay in a vacuum tower in an oil refinery. Client has requested information on our proposed WPS. Base material is carbon steel & weld consumable is ER625 GTAW+P. Client has asked if we know of any other vacuum tower has been welded using the above mentioned variables & were the results positive.

A little late to be asking.
I know of numerous weld overlay projects using 622.
It has been a long time since I saw one in 625.

I would recommend the HVOF process for performing such a repair. It produces well bonded, high-density coatings with high hardness, delivering outstanding performance in aggressive wear and corrosive environments.

Vacuum towers were/are normally clad with 316 SS. I have not heard of repair overlaying with 625 alloy. Quite frankly the Owner/Operator should be providing direction for repairs using Nickel base filler metals.
