Hi-
I have just installed ProE Wildfire 4.0 but I don't know why it seems to be slow when I try to rotate the model. It usually freezes first before it starts to rotate. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

From personal experience of slow running pro-e, framing screen, slow loading, etc. etc.. It was because my computer didn't have a fast enough processor or insufficient memory. After working with Pro-E for a year with this same computer, my employer purchased me a brand new Dell, since then, pro-e works wonderfully, that is unless I am loading a very larg assembly, a model with complex features, or alot of features. hope this helps somewhat in answering your question.

I installed it into my fujitsu laptop. This laptop equipped with all the latest stuff. I also have other friends who installed into their laptops and they don't have any problem! What else could it be?

You probably have done this already, but have you tried powering down and restarting?

Yes but it is still the same. The exact problem here is the hilite part. when I move the cursor over the part it will hihite it but when I move the cursor away it still does the hilite and disapear slowly before I can do something else.

From the sounds of it, your graphics card is the problem.

What kind of graphics card does your laptop have?

yes I also believe that my graphic card or my whole laptop can't handle this program. I am not sure what type of card I have but I have a fujitsu 17" lifebook N62. too bad , I thought it would be convenient to have it in a laptop so I could use it anywhere. But it can't happen :(

I've found when working on my laptop (IBM T42P) that turning off the blended background helps immeasurably. Without that mod I was getting horrible chopiness. Hope this helps....

Apolloman,

Get a spec for your laptop and post it here. The chances are that the issue is one of the following.

1. Not enough RAM (min reqired for WF4 is 2GB, but to be honest you need 4)

2. Not enough CACHE being used, max it out in Virtual Memory settings

3. Not having a good enough graphics card. Min 256 needed (PTC), but 512 really necessary for any large assembly models.

If you are OK an all of the above, then you need to do something called a '3Gb switch'. I can give you the link once you have checked all the avove. The switch and its pitfalls are well detailed on MCADcentral (even a post or two by myself there after I did that)

There is an option to stop ProE highlighting when you move your cursor over parts.

Set "prehighlight" to No

Here is the spec of my Fujitsu laptop:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 / 1.83 GHz
Installed Size: 2 GB / 4 GB (max)

Technology: DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz

Memory Specification Compliance: PC2-5300

Configuration Features: 2 x 1 GB

Storage
Hard Drive: 200 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 4200 rpm

Display
Display Type: 17" TFT

Max Resolution: 1440 x 900 ( WXGA+ )

Video
Graphics Processor / Vendor: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory up to 256MB

I also installed it to my Dell desktop and I have the same problem. My Dell desktop computer is Dimension 9150 with the following spec:
Processor: Intel Pentium D (2.8 GHz)
RAM installed: 4gb DDR SDRAM
Hard drive: 160 GB Standard
OS provided: Windows XP Home
Video RAM installed: 128 MB
ATI Radeon X300

appolloman,

I would start with getting better graphics cards for both machines if possible!

Most ProE guys that I know will be using NVIDIA Quadro FX3500 or above

Kevin,
Yeah I agree. I checked my computer at work that I use for pro/E and the graphic card is the NVIDIA Quadro FX3500 ! So at least I can narrow down the problem that causes it to be so slow. Thanks all...

I'm jumping in a little late here but there is a config option you can set that may help the performance. I opened a call with PTC recently and below is the response from tech support (I tried option one - setting the config graphics option to win32_gdi - and saw a huge performance improvement). I don't think you'll get the maximum performance out of your graphics card, but if you see an improvment at least you'll know you're on the right trac

Note: You must set this option in the main config.pro (mine is in C:\PTC-Apps\wildfire2\text\config.pro) BEFORE you launch Wildfire

Also Google "PTC Certified drivers" for a list of approved drivers for your card.

From PTC Technical Support:

Kindly perform following tests -
1. Set the config.pro option "graphics" to "win32_gdi"
2. Run Pro/ENGINEER without any config.pro file loaded.
3. Dedicate the graphic card to Pro/ENGINEER by setting the performance properties of the graphic card. As I already informed you about Microsoft windows limitation regarding memory utilization. I am looking into getting a new laptop and would like to be able to run ProE on it.

right now here is one laptop that i have built and am considering:

Its a Toshiba Satellite L350-ST2121

CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1GHz, 3MB L2, 800MHz FSB)
Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic 32-Bit
Office Software: Microsoft® Office 2007 Suite Ready
Memory: 2048MB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM (2048MBx1)
LCD: 17.0" Diagonal Widescreen WXGA+ TruBrite® display (1440x900)
Graphics Controller: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory
HDD: 200GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial-ATA)

For that model, that is the best graffics card that i can get.

Will this be a good laptop to run ProE on?

Look at the Dell T4300 or T6300 lines.
