I already have part A.prt.

I am now making B.prt, before I start, I need to copy some surface or surface profiles from A.prt. here is what I did.

I was then trying to click "Insert" - "Shared data" - "Copy Geometry.." but only find the "copy Geometry" is gray color. (see the picture in the link below)

This is my first time to use this function. I tried following, no luck :(

- I did open A.prt in background.
- open a.prt and select the surface, then "copy" in computer memory.

Is there anything that I missed to make this work? OR it just because of my version too low, because I asked my boss and get following info:

my proe verion is wildfire 3.0. M140.
I was told by my boss that the "style" function is not installed. Neither does the "skeleton" functions.

Any info would be highly appreciated.

You may not be allowing external references. You may need to set some or all of these config options:

ALLOW_REF_SCOPE_CHANGE YES
DEFAULT_EXT_REF_SCOPE ALL
DEFAULT_OBJECT_SCOPE_SETTING ALL
DEFAULT_OBJECT_INVALID_REFS COPY
IGNORE_ALL_REF_SCOPE_SETTINGS YES
MODEL_ALLOW_REF_SCOPE_CHANGE YES
SCOPE_INVALID_REFS COPY

I'm not sure if Style is relevant. I'd guess not.

I suspect what's missing is AAX (Advanced Assembly Extension).
Look at Help -> Technical Support Info.

Without AAX a subset of 'copy geom' type functionality is available.

_ Create an assy.
_ Place the 'parent' part in the assy.
_ Create or place a 'child' part.
_ Activate the child part and either ...
__ Insert -> Shared Data -> Merge or
__ simply Copy and Paste the desired surface.

It isn't absolutely necessary to keep the assembly used for the purpose. The parent part will always have to be In Session to propogate changes to a child. I'd have to verify but think copy / paste geometry will also update without the assembly. If not, and you've deleted the original assy, create a new one for the purpose. Experiment with a sample test set to familiarize yourself with the behavior of creation and downstream process variations.

When discussing always make sure all parties are singing from the same page; with or without AAX. Also, when reading 'articles' on the subject; most assume AAX which causes confusion if you don't have it.

And, as dgallup reminded me, read up on Scope configuration options. I think default will allow operations as described above, but memory may be playing tricks on me and you may not be running default options.

Sure it's true. I saw it on the internet.

Thank you both!

I tried the configuration as per dgallup and made the settings as suggested. no luck.

My boss contacted the PROE manager in europe, he says my proe is only fundation version. I guess that is the culprit.

have you tried published geom, it works better, might need advanced features too though. but copy will work if you create an asm . as above

you can simply copy by

1. activate the part you want to surfaces in

2.click on one of the surfaces till it goes red with a check in it, and do ctrl-c ctrl-v to activate the copy command, curves etc work the sam way. buy holding down the ctrl key you can add surfaces as you want.

this way only allows one type of feature from one part in the asm.

I believe it does require an AAX license, at least in WF2.
Which brings up another source of confusion(?) re 'copy geom'
type functions. IIRC in WF (Foundation Advantage, and I was
learning Pro/E so maybe it was only I that was being confused)
I could ...

Insert -> Shared Data ->
. Copy Geometry from Other Model
. Merge from Other Model
. Cutout from Other Model

... That all went away with WF2. WF & WF2 are the only
two versions I've used, or even seen, so don't know if
such version to version changes are common.

I'm not sure if I understand. I think you mean 'per copy feature'?
With a Part Active in an assembly I can Copy / Paste / Paste Special,
as applicable, any number of geometry entities or Features from any
lower regen order entity subject to normal Edit -> Copy selection
set limitations. (If you don't see that maybe a reference Scope
definition config option is in play?)
