We are designing a vessel for a skid manufacturer here in the US. The owner is in Canada, so the vessel will carry CRN.

After submitting the initial drawing, we received a revision request asking that the design temperature be shown in both SI(C) and US(F) on the nameplate. When we submitted the revised nameplate design with both metric temperatures and pressures, they came back again. They specifically asked that we ONLY show pressure values in PSIG, and temperatures in BOTH SI and US.

My first reaction was: Why? But does anyone know if there's a specific section that addresses any consistency standard on nameplates? UG-116 & UG-119 do not address it.

Read introductory paragraph U-4 of the latest ASME Section VIII-1 for guidance on consistency regarding units.

Yes U-4 seemed ambiguous regarding whether parenthetical references could be shown for some values, but not all. We'll just submit the nameplate design as the customer wants, and see what the Province says

In addition to required markings we add some marking for ourselves and additional marking as required by the customer. I don't see how adding temps in deg C. will be a problem, as long as required markings are in appropriate units.

Mike

I would think that the parenthetical values would be there as an added convenience but not for the design basis and of course it would not make any sense to mix the units for a design basis anyway.
I have found conflicting interpretations on mixing markings found on the dataplate and agree with SnTMans additional marking comments.
For my $0.02, regarding units for a design, consistency among units customary for the installed location is appropriate and by submitting to the client as you have, would be the best option of course with AI concurrence.
