Hi all, I'm asking if there is a difference between design procedure for piping system which may found inside some industrial facility as oil refinery or petrochemical facility and design procedure of natural gas transmission pipelines facilities as metering stations.
note that, I don't asking about code requirements, I know they will be different in two cases, but I'm asking about the steps of design and the drawings should be made (as PFD, P&ID)

thank you in advance

Design studies are considerably reduced. Drawings are much the same in overall coverage, but a lot less in number and in complexity than what you need for a refinery. Are you doing preFEED, FEED, or detail design?

As BigInch says, documentation for pipelines facilities will not be as great as for a refinery, but can still vary in extent. Where 1 or 2 P&IDs might cover metering or pigging stations, dozens will be required for even a small field compression station.

thank you all for response, actually we are using detailed design

The driver for sizing pipeline and plat piping is actual quite different:

-Pipeline: dP/m (and thus velocity) is the main driver but with an "optimization loop" concerning size (minimizing) and number of pumping/Compressor stations. Also due concerns must be paid to capacity since capacity increase often means a new pipeline
-Plant piping: Velocity (noise and erosion) are the main drivers in most circumstances. Usually dP has less significance then you would think since valves etc accounts for most of the dP. Capacity is often limited by equipment and upgrading piping not _that_ expensive if replacing equipment is considered.
