Hi professional,

My query is how much delay we can give to perform NDE after welding a pipeline BUTT joint AS PER API 1104.

Any exact reference will be very much helpful.

Thanking in advance.

HI my friend
24 hours should be enough to identify if there is a cold cracking problem. If such a problem is found, I sugest a second test after 48 hours to assess the complete problem. In the case of shrinkage, if hydrogen is not suspected, no delay is necessary

hello my friend,
Thanks for the reply, technical speaking you are correct BUT, BUT

My query remains the same, any clause in API 1104 or B31.4 to support 12 hours, 24 hours or 48 hours delay for NDE?????

Usually after 48 hours, it may take 72 hours for high-strength steel such as 690MPa steel

Do you have copy of the spec.
Did you read it. , why ate you relying on others for what requires.

So ok if it was omited then time is not applicable. How ever it is your discretion when to do NDT.
Normally it's done right after weld
And if PWH required then again after all heat treat and mechanical operations.

Make sure it is not mentioned in an other spec, heat treat, welding.

The usual approach is to impose a delay on NDT during welding procedure qualification where there is not a time issue, typically a minimum of 24 hours. Satisfactory NDT at this stage then covers for production NDT at a time of the contractor’s choosing. The approach is usually on the basis that pipe chemistry has no significant variations from that used in the qualification tests. The requirements will come from end users’ specs, and not the indicated standards unless you want to try BS 4515-1.

Yes but it is prudent to do NDT while the welders equipment is set up to apply rework or repairs. That is why it is done right after weld if it is prudent and possible. It is not always the welder and equipment has to be reacheduled and reset up.
Also there has to be fit up men to apply the repair, drill or grind of indications, as necessary.
Inspectors to re NDT the rework.

Don't forget to perform the Visual Inspection as soon as possible.
