I need to redesign a very basic component that connects a slender cylinder to a plate that is roughly perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. I see a basic topology optimization study could help us use less material.

I'm not excited to add a suite of software to our portfolio and go through a bunch of training for this one project unless we can get competent at it quickly and the process is efficient w.r.t man-hours. Would this make sense to contract out to an experienced specialist, or just invest in the software and training and keep this tool in our arsenal?

Thanks,

DAvid

As a quick look see why not try deleting the low stresssed elements and thickening up the high stressed areas? A couple of iterations should reveal the natural load paths.

Good idea - I think the Creo Simulate Independent mode might permit that.

Hi!

Abaqus is very mighty in the context of topology optimization as well as in shape optimization and it is (in my opinion at least) easy to use. You should give it a try. That is assuming that you have/can get Abaqus from somewhere.
