Need for References 2

Folks... HELP!!!

Ever since I started doing aircraft accident investigations and materials failures [early 1980s] I have appreciated the part that Detail Design, Materials and Manufacturing Processes [M&P] and Failure Analysis play in aerospace. I have collected a hodge-podge of company documents, military and industry specs and handbooks…. and thru it all have found (1) great company reference text [proprietary] and (4) books that are VERY OLD [‘40s and 50s].. or are only “sorta close” to the subject... but have seen no CONCISE, DEFINITIVE and CURRENT [relatively new] text or handbooks on the subject of M&P for Aircraft and Aerospace Design.

What publications am I missing???? Is this a “book”, or series of "books" that needs to be written??? Does any one care about these subjects???

Folks… inform me of the reference materials YOU use on these subjects: TEXT-BOOKS, HANDBOOKS, SPECS, PAPERS, ETC…

? Lots of good info, most of it more recent than 40's and 50's. I would do a thorough search of the various scientific journals for any particular areas of interest (e.g., titanium AND forging AND compressor blade). If you have access to Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, METADEX, etc. this can be quite fruitful. Obviously a university library is a good place to go if you don't have personal access. The University of Michigan has a huge list of journals, identified by subject: check out the aerospace list at

or the materials science list at

Journals of particular interest would be Composite Structures, Engineering Failure Analysis, Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, Advanced Engineering Materials, Corrosion Science, Acta Mat, Scripta Mat, Met Trans, and Mat Sci.

Let me restate my problem...

I know about the CINDAS Aerospace Metals Handbook (5V set), MIL-HDBK-5 etc...

However, the M&P field is huge... and finding a comprehensive text that covers the entire "field"### is my question. IE: A "text", Hdbk, etc... covering the following topics... and that point to source data for indepth references, subject reviews and general/detailed knowledge.

###Relative to aircraft and aeospace vehicles:

1. Structural Materials [metals, plastics, FRP, elastomers, FRE, textiles, etc]
2. Non-structural materials [coatings, sealants, adhesives, surface treatments, etc].
3. Manufactuiring methods and processes [most common fab methods and modification treatments ... machining, shot peening, welding, bonding, fastening, etc].
4. Inspection and characterization processes [NDT, DT, etc].
5. Materials deteriorartion and failure analysis.

Based on your previous posts and profile, I figured you already knew about the CINDAS refs (I didn't even bother with MIL-HDBK-5), but I thought it was worth mentioning for others if they were interested. As far as I know, there is not a handbook or recent text that covers the topics in which you are interested. Obviously ASM International (

http://www.asminternational.org)

has several references on each individual topic, but the coverage within them is not confined to the aircraft and aerospace industry. Even confining the content to this industry, I think it would take several multi-hundred page volumes to cover all of the topics that you mention with any sort of authoritative content.
