Hi, I am trying to convert an .iges file into a format I could open in inventor and edit as solids. The model in question is a detailed Humvee vehicle in .iges (NURBS) format. I try to open it in inventor and it keeps crashing, and the one time it opened, only 2-3 entities were solids, everyhting else was a surface (transparent orange).
I am able to open the file in catia, but need to use it in inventor for work. The model was created and saved in catia, as an .iges.

Can anyone please convert this file for me to something inventor could read as a solid, or give me instructions on how to. I will email the file.

thanks in advance,

my softwares: Inventor SP10, Catia V5-R16

To the best of my knowledge iges always comes in as surfaces, you then have to unite them (or whatever the command is called in Inventor) to make a solid.

This seldom happens as you always seem to end up with badly trimmed surfaces and you often spend hours if not days fixing a large complicated model. You can tweak the import and export options but this is very much trial and error in my experience.

Step is a far better option for solids in my opinion.

IGES can be solids or surfaces depending on originating geometry and Options selected on export.

Perhaps you are thinking of Stitch or Sculpt?

or give me instructions on how to

Much easier in 2010.

I did try the stitch command and fooled around with the conversion between the two programs and am getting some objects as solids and some as surfaces. Still not the result I want (all solids).

will post the outcome,

thanks guys.

Still not the result I want (all solids).

My guess is that something as complicated as a Humvee that the original designer did not do the entire model as solids.

In any case you will probably need to become quite familiar with the Construction Environment in Inventor to repair the model.

If it opens in CATIA .. try to import through the tool available for inventor. (check autodesk labs website). then you can import CATIA model in inventor.
