Hi, I am having some issues translating an .iges (NURBS) file into one that autodesk inventor could use. The file in question is a detailed HUMVEE model that was created in V5, r16 and saved as an igs/iges. When I open it in inventor, it crashes and the few times that it opened, majority of the part entities show up as surfaces and very few of them are solids. If i open that same file in mechanical desktop, the solids are grouped and not all splines and polylines.

I am not a catia user but do have access to it. If it's possible, please instruct on how to convert this file into a solid model file, that a program like inventor could open (inventor can open stp, igs, sat). I fooled around with the stitch/promote commands in inventor and am not getting the desired results.

thanks in advance,

software: catia V5,r16 with stp translator.

Personally I like using STEP (.stp) files not .iges (we call them "I'll guess" files) for translation between Inventor, Solid works, etc...

You should have success with this without changing any export settings in CATIA.

just go:

"Save As" ---> in the drop down scroll to .stp

Good luck!

We use iges only as a last resort. I agree with Dean - .stp is far superior for solid bodies.

Iges settings out of Catia should be

Tools --> Options --> Compatibility --> Iges --> Export Curve and surface type :B-Spline
Representation : solid if you want a solid after translation or Surface.

I did try the .step method but no success there also. No model would show up in inventor. Is there a similar setting in the step conversion?

"Iges settings out of Catia should be"
I did try this and but now a message in inventor is telling me that it is unable to translate the geometry, "the translation operation is not yet supported" BUT the iges model does open up in autodesk mechanical, as a solid, so can I conclude inventor is the problem?

I also tried this, I changed my iges conversion settings just like DBezaire noted, converted the file into iges, then opened it back up in catia, then converted to a .stp file, but now inventor reads nothing, the model is blank.

At this point, I dont have the expertise to make this succesful, so I have attached the hood.igs file. Please let me know if anyone of you can convert this into a .step or a .sat (ver 6 or less) as a solid.

thanks alot for the advice,

Try this out.

thanks ewh, i will try the file out tommorrow at work and post my results...

ewh, the file opened in inventor, but the model is not one big solid. each entity is an individual surface, ive attached a jpg of what it looks like in inventor. I am guessing this is what the outcome would be for translation?

I am expecting the hood to be one solid block after the translation, but this is not probable, is it?

I could use this model but the problem is that I cannot change the color properties of the surfaces in inventor, so I am left with an orange humvee,

thanks,
