Need help on an Ideal detail. I am using the seismic code on ACI 318-08 chapter 21.6.4.4 for minimum ties column reinforcement. This code is already pushing up my reinforcement amount from my typical #3 two legs to twice that. I am trying to stay at a minimum but also maintain a solid column detail. Chapter 21.6.4.2 mentions to no have cross ties spacing greater than 14 inches. The image I provided of a design has more than that so I know I am off. The design calls for number 4 bars 3 legs but it wont really work. I was thinking a design with number threes or number 5 bars while meeting the minimum Ash. I was wondering if putting a stirrup on the short side of the column can work ? or any suggestion to stay at around .6 in^2 of reinforcement ties while holding a good support. #3=.11in^2 #4=.2 in^2 and #5-.31in ^2
