I sometimes have to download files from other sources/companies etc. Every once in a while when I try to open a file that I have downloaded I get this message:

I can't seem to figure out what this message is and why it shows up for only random files. Has anyone ever seen this message or can anyone give me some advice why this is happening?? Your information would be greatly appreciated because this is causing me major problems at the moment.

Thanks,

Andrew

My guess is it is a Pro/E file. They use the same .prt extension

I already tried opening the files in Pro/E and it gives me error saying the file cannot be loaded....

imgur.com is blocked here. Can you post the wording of the error message or upload it to engineering.com (the attachment option below the reply box)?

I think Cadkey also uses the .prt file extension. It is a logical choice for a CAD program, I wouldn't be surprised if several others also used it.

If you are sure it is an NX file, you can use the command line utility ug_inspect.exe (found in the UGII folder of your NX install) to scan for part corruptions. Open a command window and the syntax would be:
<path to UGII folder>\ug_inspect.exe -scan <path to your .prt file>

I should also mention that documentation for this (and other utilities) can be found in the help file under NX Essentials -> Utilities and File Management -> Command Line Utilities.

I can't figure out the command prompting but if it is a Cadkey .prt file, is there any way I can manipulate it in order to open it in Pro/E or UG ??

Thanks

Try opening the file with Notepad and see what comes up.
if you are able to see text then maybe post the first 5-6 llines of what you get.

If you open the file in Notepad, all that comes up is the name of the file followed by a few numbers. the Second line of the text is all random characters.

If I open a NX file in notepad, I see "U G _ P A R T" in the 9th line.

UG and Pro/E .prt files have an ASCII text header section.

"Wildfires are dangerous, hard to control, and economically catastrophic."

Perhaps the file is from a newer version of NX?
Please run ug_inspect and post the results.

after running ug_inspect, it says "In File <file-name> could not open <file-name>: status 1"

I just now looked for the first time at the image posted with the original message and the answer was there all along. It clearly states that the file is "Not a part file" End of discussion!!!
