I need some info to help solve our seal and bearing problems. First, are there any good reference materials on carbon seal design? Specifically, I would like to know what the face to face (carbon to ceramic) pressure should be to see if we're in spec. Secondly, we have a number of motors with sealed bearings that appear to have dried-out grease. I have conflicting advice from the manufacturer's engineer and a competing manufacturer's engineer as to whether or not I can rejuvenate this dried-out grease with oil. It seems feasible to me, but the manufacturer says no. The other guy says, "No Problem." Who to believe?

as i know you can use seal manufacturer's catalogs for select your seal material(for example : Burgman's catalog ).

If you have not yet found references regarding particular carbon seal design, there are a number of innovative companies that are making interesting carbon seals. If you still need the carbon seal info, I guess just post another message here. I'm new here, so forgive me any forum etiquite breach.

I don't believe you can bring old grease back to life using oil. The greases contain solids and other additives that act as a thickening agent. Old grease is just the collection of these solids. Clean the old stuff out and put in fresh grease- it will save you time later.
