I'm operating on a limited budget and need a software package that can aid in design of small water distribution networks, such as the fire lines within a multifamily development given fire flow tests at the road.

Any recommendations? I have some limited experience with KYPipe, but I'd like to entertain a more affordable alternative if there is one. My guess is most of my future work in this area is going to be around 10 to 20 nodes tops.

Thanks in advance.

epanet is free and works well for small designs

I would suggest Epanet. Free, capable and user friendly with easy to use GUI (Graphic User Interface). Capable of steady and tine extended simulations with control command lines. Good support by forums and some GIS add-ons.
I was working with KYpipe many years ago but Epanet is in completely another level.
Regarding the model size, don't worry. You can model a town or even a city without any problem. I've done so.
Good luck.
